What is Weatherization?

The Weatherization Assistance Program reduces energy costs for income eligible families by improving the efficiency of their homes.

Weatherization measures reduce average annual energy costs by $413 per home.

Weatherization reduces energy costs for families by improving the efficiency of their homes. High energy costs are an excessive burden on households, and by lowering energy bills for these families, Weatherization increases their self-sufficiency.

Weatherization prioritizes services to the elderly, persons with disabilities, and families with children. Measures are delivered to single-family homes, multi-family dwellings, and mobile homes.

Technicians use energy audits to determine which energy efficiency measures are most appropriate and cost-effective for each home. Weatherization crews also address energy-related health and safety conditions, particularly carbon monoxide and combustion safety.

Typical measures include, but are not limited to:

  • installing insulation
  • air sealing of cracks and holes to reduce heat loss through attics and walls
  • performing tune-ups and repairs to heating systems
  • providing energy efficient lighting and refrigeration
  • window and/or outside door repair or replacement
  • minor repairs which are needed to ensure maximum efficiency of the weatherization services performed
