Historical Background:
All of these actions filed in Warren County, take place in Supreme Court. These documents are the official report on the sale or settlement of a variety of civil matters, including personal and real property. Matters involving real property are often quite complicated and require a careful study of real property law for the time period that is being researched. Some of the early (pre-1860) documents may contain divorce settlements. Infant papers appear throughtout the time-frame, along with incompetencies. Many of these papers document the voluntary or involuntary sale of property to provide funds for maintenance of a minor or incompetent or to settle a debt, judgment or mortgage. At times, the Sheriff of Warren County was named referee. In the 20th century, these papers seem to be absorbed in Civil Action Case Files. Additional series name: Sheriff's Report of Sale.
