Does your family or business enjoy the natural beauty of Warren County? Do you enjoy being in a litter free environment? Then if you answered yes to either question, did you know that the Warren County Department of Public Works administers its Adopt-A-Highway program to meet those goals?
The Adopt a Highway Program is partnership between the county and businesses, organizations, individuals or families. In exchange for regular litter removal, the participating group is allowed to have its name posted on a sign, in the section of the highway that they maintain. Each year the DPW determines which sections of highway are available for adoption. Once that determination has been made and an adoption agreement has been signed, the Department will place Adopt-A-Highway signs within that specific section of highway, acknowledging the organization.
Participants are asked to commit to picking up litter along a section of county highway, typically one mile in length. The DPW requests four collections a year and a commitment of two years, in order to make this a successful program. The DPW provides hard hats, reflective vests, and garbage bags. After the trash is collected, participants are asked to leave the bags in one area off of the road, and to notify DPW office immediately to request a pick up.
This type of program participation fosters a true sense of community ownership of a roadway as well as increasing its sense of civic pride. This program also assists the County with its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Program requirements, which are in place to improve the water resources of Warren County.
