Warren County was honored to host the commissioners of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and New York State Department of Transportation at our Department of Public Works headquarters in Warrensburg on Monday, December 8, 2025 to talk about road salt!
Warren County DPW has been a leader in the use of brine to reduce environmental impacts and make roads easier to treat during ice and snow storms, and DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton and DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez pointed out that Warren County and a number of towns in the county embraced the environmentally friendly use of saltwater brine and plow technology to improve winter maintenance of roads.

"Warren County is a true leader in this effort," Dominguez said.

Warren County DPW Superintendent Kevin Hajos, President of the NY State County Highway Superintendents Association, pointed out that using brine and new "live edge" snow plowing technology has been better for the environment, those who travel our roads and taxpayers.
"I’m proud to share that through a combination of innovation, training, and collaboration, we have reduced our overall road salt usage by approximately 30%. This is a significant accomplishment—not only for public safety and tax savings, but for the long-term health of our environment," Hajos said.
As part of the "Don't Be Salty New York" educational campaign, the DEC and DOT also provided tips on use of rock salt around our homes as well.
