DPW staffer honored for lifesaving effort

str
Kaleb Stockman, an equipment operator for Warren County Department of Public Works, was driving his DPW vehicle back to the DPW south end shop in Queensbury on March 13, 2025, when he saved a life. And on Friday, the Warren County Board of Supervisors thanked him for it.

Stockman came across a motor vehicle crash that had occurred seconds earlier on Quaker Road, as a man who hit a utility pole had been thrown from the vehicle.

Stockman said he recognized that the man’s injuries were severe, with a compound fracture to his femur and likely ruptured artery that resulted in severe blood loss. He said he removed his belt and tightened it above the wound to cut off blood flow and stop the bleeding, awaiting first responders. The first police officer on the scene told Stockman he likely saved the victim’s life.

Stockman, who has been working for DPW since June 2023, said he received first aid training when he volunteered with the Queensbury Central Fire Department. He said he also used the tourniquet training when encountering a motorcycle accident in 2022 that involved a serious leg injury.(County Public Works staff also received “Stop the Bleed” training for severe wound treatment in 2021).

“Had Kaleb not stopped and did what he did, he probably would have bled to death,” Warren County Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos said.

The Board of Supervisors presented Stockman with a certificate of Excellence at Friday’s board meeting.

“We are lucky to have people like Kaleb out in the community,” said Kevin Geraghty, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors.
