Warren County will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with a ceremony on Friday, September 11th, 2026 that will include unveiling of a bridge dedication sign for NY State Conservation Officer Stephen Raymond, who passed away from cancer that stemmed from his response to the World Trade Center attacks.
The event will be held in front of Warren County Municipal Center, 1340 Route 9, Queensbury, starting at 12 p.m. If rain is forecast, it will be moved inside the Municipal Center. The public is welcome.
The event program will include unveiling of a sign created by Warren County Department of Public Works to be placed on Warren County Route 35/Diamond Point Road in Lake George in memory of Raymond. (NYS Department of Transportation is placing a sign at the Exit 23 bridge on the Northway in the future as well.)
Raymond was a Warren County resident who passed away on April 17th, 2017 at age 67 after battling cancers linked to his duties with NY State following the 2001 terrorist attacks. He worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Law Enforcement for 26 years, ending with retirement in 2007. He served most of his career in Warren County and the Adirondacks.
The September 11th event in Warren County will include presentation of the bridge sign to Raymond’s family, along with remarks from NY State Senator Dan Stec; NY State Assemblyman Matt Simpson; NYS DEC Lt. (Ret.) Robert Henke and other dignitaries. DEC personnel and local emergency responders will be on hand as well.
Kevin Geraghty, Chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors and a 56-year member of the Warrensburg Fire Co., said: “We will never forget the brave first responders who answered the calls to serve their fellow citizens that day and in the months that followed. They ran into burning buildings, assisting many as buildings collapsed and sorted through rubble for months to come. Sadly we continue to lose dedicated public servants such as Stephen Raymond from illnesses connected to their work at Ground Zero, men and women who went into harm’s way to do their jobs.”
Lake George Supervisor Vincent Crocitto said: “We are pleased that we are able to honor Steve Raymond for the exemplary work he did for the residents of Warren County and the State of New York for more than two decades, duties that ultimately claimed his life. Steve was a hero who did not turn down an assignment, both in the days after 9/11 and during his 26-plus years as a New York State Conservation Officer. Having Steve Raymond’s name on a bridge to thank him for all that he did during his career is the least the citizens of the Town of Lake George and Warren County can do to remember him for his service.”
