MEET THOMAS SZABO, OUR NEW DPW SOLID WASTE AND RECYCLING COMPLIANCE COORDINATOR

Warren County’s new solid waste management plan added an important new position to the Warren County Department of Public Works, a solid waste and recycling compliance coordinator who will play an integral role in Warren County reducing its waste flow in the coming years.

There are some lofty goals for this new position -- to make sure recyclables are recycled and waste haulers report what they have taken in, that food waste is composted whenever possible and public education occurs as to how to properly handle waste, among other duties.

Queensbury native Thomas Szabo started in this new job earlier this month, and briefed Warren County supervisors this week on what he’s been up to (watch the Public Works Committee video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0qx1r3esCA).

Szabo graduated from Paul Smith’s College in 2018, working as a waste reduction team member at the college. He then worked in sustainability and zero waste positions in North Carolina and Colorado before returning home for his new job.

“I am excited to be working in the place I grew up and be a part of making Warren County more sustainable,” Szabo said.

Szabo’s boss, Warren County Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos said his new staffer has hit the ground running, identifying 30 different waste haulers who do business in Warren County and working to determine where they are taking their waste.

“We are excited to have Thomas on the job, and we think he will have a big impact on how solid waste and recyclables are handled in Warren County going forward,” Hajos said.

Welcome to Team Warren County, Thomas!
